Preseidential Candidate Forums
The National Forum on Disability Issues: was held on July 26, 2008 in Columbus, Ohio to commemorate the 18th anniversary of our civil rights law, the Americans with Disabilities Act. The forum featured time slots for the presidential candidates to individually present their visions for the future of disability policy in America followed by questions by Moderator Judy Woodruff, news anchor and journalist ("The News Hour with Jim Lehrer"). Senators McCain and Tom Harkin, representing Senator Obama were present for the forum and you can watch it in its entirety here!
A National Forum on Equality, Opportunity and Access: November 2, 2007, more than 600 people participated in a presidential candidate forum in Manchester, hosted by Granite State Independent Living, the National Council on Independent Living, and some 28 organizations on behalf of Americans with disabilities. Candidates who participated in the Forum included: Senators Clinton (D-NY), Biden (D-DE), Dodd, and Gravel (R-AK), Representative David Bonior (D-MI) on behalf of Senator John Edwards (D-NC), and Representative Dennis Kucinich (D-OH). Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) participated in the Forum by phone from the campaign trail. Each candidate spoke about their policy agendas to enhance the lives of people with disabilities and then answered three questions from New Hampshire attendees. Read summaries, transcripts, and news coverage.
Candidate Questionnaire: In an effort to inform our members of the candidates’ policy priorities and concerns, ADAPT, AAPD, NCIL, and SABE have created questions that address the issues most important to our members. We asked the candidates to respond to these questions with the intention of sharing candidates’ answers not only to our own members but also beyond our membership bases by posting the responses on our websites and circulating the responses over our national email listservs. NCIL thanks Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden, John Edwards, Chris Dodd, and Bill Richardson for thier responses. Unfortunately, we did not recieve a response from any republican candidates. Read Obama's response or view all the responses side-by-side.
