Keeping Our Eyes on the Prize: Independence! 2011 Annual Conference on Independent Living Sponsorship Opportunities! Advertising! Exhibits! Freedom's name is mighty sweet And soon we're gonna meet Keep your eyes on the prize Hold on The only thing I did was right Was the day we started to fight Keep your eyes on the prize Hold on “Eyes on the Prize,” this year’s conference theme, is the name of an old a civil rights song, drawn from an even older hymn entitled, “Keep Your Hand on the Plow.” The thought is simple: once you have set your mind on an ideal, you must stay focused on it, or you may be distracted and lose sight of it. The disability rights movement and the independent living movement are very much a part of the civil rights movement. And, just as the stereotypes and prejudices against people with disabilities are similar to those against people with different cultural, ethnic and religious backgrounds, our desire for equal opportunities in employment, housing, education and citizenship are the same. And we all share the knowledge that no matter what is happening around us, no matter what forces attempt to sway us, to delay us, to hold us, or to call us back, we must be steadfast and “keep our eyes on the prize.” What Do Centers for Independent Living Do?* Centers for Independent Living are just that: places that offer a full range of services and support to people with disabilities who live on their own or who are preparing to live on their own. Staffed and programmed by people with disabilities, Centers provide assistance based on direct experience, delivered by people who have a personal understanding of the needs that are being served. -Systems Change Advocacy strives to change policies to make government, transportation, and housing systems more accessible to people with disabilities. -Individual Advocacy is a tool used to navigate the intricacies of systems such as Social Security in order to meet consumers’ individual needs. -Peer Support Services support people as they deal with the emotional aspects of their disabilities through group and individual counseling. -Personal Assistance Services match home attendants with individual consumers to assist with housekeeping and personal care. -Independent Living Skills Training provides individualized instruction in life skills and setting and achieving goals such as using public transportation, money management, social skills, attendant management, nutrition and self-advocacy. -Information and Referral provides information about disability issues and referral to other agencies with services to the disability community. This is available to the public and to CIL consumers. -Housing Services assist consumers in finding and keeping affordable and accessible housing. -Residential Access Programs assist in the installation of ramps, lifts, and accessibility modifications. -Assistive Technology Services help consumers obtain, repair and understand how to use assistive devices such as ramps, wheelchairs, TTY's, and computers. -Employment Services counsels job seekers in how to set goals, enhance skills, and develop resume writing and interviewing techniques. Centers also work with local businesses to obtain job referrals. *Based on information from the Berkeley Center for Independent Living Home Page 2011 Sponsorship Packages $25,000 Level: The Revolutionary!
