The 2012 Annual Conference on Independent Living celebrates NCIL’s 30th Anniversary! Over the past three decades, we have grown from a handful of advocates and the Centers they represent into a force of thousands of people with disabilities from CILs and SILCs in every state and territory of the U.S. Our achievements over the past 30 years have been made together and our futures depend on the fellowship we have forged. Let us, from all corners of this nation, converge this June in Washington, D.C. to celebrate our history and accomplishments, while we steel ourselves to tackle these tough economic times head on! Leadership and training for this critical event start here. We must continue to educate and empower ourselves if we are to meet the challenges we face. We have promises to keep, and miles to go before we sleep! Sincerely, Kelly Buckland NCIL Executive Director ABOUT NCIL The National Council on Independent Living is the longest-running national cross-disability, grassroots organization run by and for people with disabilities. Founded in 1982, NCIL represents thousands of organizations and individuals including: individuals with disabilities, Centers for Independent Living (CILs), Statewide Independent Living Councils (SILCs), and other organizations that advocate for the human and civil rights of people with disabilities throughout the United States. An outcome of the national Disability Rights and Independent Living Movements, NCIL was founded to embody the values of disability culture and Independent Living philosophy, which creates a new social paradigm and emphasizes that people with disabilities are the best experts on their own needs, that they have crucial and valuable perspective to contribute to society, and are deserving of equal opportunity to decide how to live, work, and take part in their communities. NCIL envisions a world in which people with disabilities are valued equally and participate fully. Since its inception, NCIL has carried out its mission by assisting member CILs and SILCs in building their capacity to promote social change, eliminate disability-based discrimination, and create opportunities for people with disabilities to participate in the legislative process to affect change. NCIL promotes a national advocacy agenda set by its membership and provides input and testimony on national disability policy. In 2011 NCIL was ranked as a top 3 non-profit by GuideStar! FACTS WHAT DO CENTERS FOR INDEPENDENT LIVING DO? Centers for Independent Living work toward a society in which people with disabilities are valued equally and participate fully. In order to accomplish this vision, they advocate for individuals facing discrimination in employment, education, housing, transportation, and healthcare to ensure equal opportunity. CILs offer assistance finding accessible housing, transportation, and recreation; assist businesses and local governments in creating inclusive communities; help people with newly acquired disabilities find their voices; and celebrate disability pride! CILs base their priorities and actions on the belief that people with disabilities have the right to decide how to live, work, and participate in their communities and that we must organize for social change. In practice, creating an organization for people with disabilities run by people with disabilities changes the value system, the implementation, and the direction of an organization overall. ATTENDANCE PROFILE In recent years the NCIL conference has hosted nearly 1,000 individuals including our grassroots advocates, CIL and SILC Executive Directors, Board members, and staff. As the only cross-age and cross-disability national advocacy organization, NCIL’s Annual Conference draws individuals from all 50 states of all ages and disabilities. The NCIL conference also draws many government officials. Recently, NCIL conference attendees have had the privilege to hear from Senator Tom Harkin, Senator Bernie Sanders, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, Congressman John Lewis, Congressman Danny Davis, Congressman Jim Langevin, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, Assistant Attorney General Tom Perez, Assistant Secretary of Labor for Disability Employment Policy Kathleen Martinez, and HHS Office on Disability Director Henry Claypool.
