Sunday, July 20

NCIL Orientation Session: 4:00pm - 6:00pm; Constitution A and B

NCIL offers this general session for new NCIL members and conference attendees. Join us to gain greater insight into NCIL’s history, its Annual Conference, and formal procedures such as voting at the Annual Council Meeting, preparations for the annual March and Rally, and more!

 

 

Monday, July 21

The Annual Conference will open with the keynote address of Ambassador Luis Gallegos, Ecuador’s Ambassador to the US and Permanent Representative to the United Nations. Gallegos served as Chairman of the UN Ad Hoc Committee that drafted the UN Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities. Ambassador Gallegos has proven himself as a true advocate of people with disabilities all over the world. Following this address, we will pay tribute to NCIL’s Regional Advocacy Award winners for their leadership in Independent Living.

Legislative & Advocacy Update: 10:15am- 11:15am; Independence Ballroom

Get up-to-date information on the progress of NCIL’s advocacy efforts from the Chairs of each committee. The Chairs will review and answer questions about NCIL’s advocacy talking points so that participants are fully prepared for their Congressional visits on Tuesday.

This is an opportunity to strategize for your Congressional visits. Each state should decide who will attend which meeting to ensure every Senator and Representative will be visited.

Veterans Task Force Meeting: 6:00pm - 7:00pm; Independence DE

Including veterans with disabilities in IL is always important, but with two wars being fought overseas, it is critical advocates reach out to veterans returning home and learning to live with their disabilities. Join NCIL’s Veterans Task Force to discuss these important efforts.

2008 Rally at the US Capitol: 11:30am - 12:30pm; 3rd St NW & US Capitol Reflecting Pool

This annual tradition is your opportunity to take grassroots advocacy to the streets! NCIL will march to Capitol Hill carrying signs and demonstrating support for the independence of people with disabilities! Marchers will converge in front of the US Capitol Reflecting Pool for an empowering rally featuring speakers from the Movement and members of Congress.

Capitol Hill Visits: 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Following the rally, participants are strongly encouraged to meet with their elected officials to discuss issues that are important in their districts.

Make sure to attend the Annual Council Meeting to vote on the resolutions and board elections that will guide NCIL in the coming year and beyond. This year, elections will be held for: Vice President, Secretary, Representatives of Regions II, IV, VI, VIII, and X, Diversity Committee Chair, and Members-At-Large. Don’t miss the Annual Council Meeting – it’s your vote!

Spend some time browsing the services offered by our exhibitors, many of whom are NCIL members. The Conference would not be possible without their generous contributions, so please stop by and support them! Note: Exhibits will be open Wednesday and Thursday.

Join us for a banquet dinner in celebration of the ADA and NCIL’s National Advocacy Award Winners! Senator Tom Harkin will present the Frank Harkin Memorial Award to Senator Edward Kennedy in recognition of his commitment to the rights of Americans with disabilities. NCIL President Kelly Buckland will present the National Advocacy Award, President’s Award, Diana Vietz Award, and Max Starkloff Lifetime Achievement Award to IL advocates who have led extraordinary efforts to advance freedom and opportunities for people with disabilities.

Attend the first meeting of the newly elected NCIL Board of Directors. This meeting is open to the public and all members and Conference attendees are welcome and encouraged to attend!
