The Boston Center for Independent Living: Healthcare Policy Organizer

The Boston Center for Independent Living (BCIL) is seeking an individual to engage in advocacy on health policy and conduct community organizing on healthcare issues for people with disabilities. Focus will include strengthening BCIL’s grassroots constituency, statewide networks, and links with national advocacy organizations. Key issues include promoting quality services and care for people on both Medicaid and Medicare and protecting community-based long-term services and supports that enable people with disabilities to live independently.

Key duties

  • Will organize people with disabilities in Greater Boston to increase the grassroots voice in BCIL on healthcare issues, including changes to the Medicaid and Medicare programs.
  • Will represent BCIL at various events and meetings with public officials and other advocacy organizations.
  • Will work with various coalitions and networks, including ones across the state and country, as vehicles to advance BCIL’s advocacy message.
  • Will organize public events on healthcare issues, including legislative advocacy days, rallies, and similar events.
  • Will research healthcare policy issues and help develop BCIL positions.
  • Will assist staff on other issue campaigns as appropriate.

Preferred Background

  • Understanding of healthcare issues in the disability community or familiarity with comparable concerns.
  • Strong writing skills and experience speaking in public settings.
  • Experience in community organizing.
  • Experience in public policy development and advocacy.
  • Ability to travel around Boston and across the state and around the country.
  • Experience researching public policy issues.
  • Bilingual capabilities a plus.
  • Strong computer and social media skills a plus.

Job specifics

  • Salary: negotiable based on experience.

  • Reports to: executive director.
