Program Director
The Silicon Valley Independent Living Center (SVILC), a not-for-profit center for advocacy, service and social change for people with disabilities, is searching for an experienced Program Director to supervise all components of SVILC’s Program Department including the provision of independent living services, advocacy initiatives, civil rights enforcement, peer support, and information/referral. This is an excellent opportunity to become a part of one of the first Independent Living Centers (ILCs) and disability civil rights organizations in the United States. Since 1976, SVILC has grown from a staff of five to an award-winning organization with a staff of over twenty and an annual budget of over $1 million. In 2008, SVILC was named as a “Best Nonprofit to Work For” by Opportunity Knocks.
The full time position reports to the Executive Director and is responsible for program development, departmental budgeting and planning, development of annual departmental goals and objectives, staffing the Program Committee of the Board, staff supervision, and personnel management. The Program Director is also responsible for monitoring the implementation of all federal, state, and private grants.
Qualifications: This position is designed for a person who has extensive knowledge and understanding of Independent Living philosophy, a social/political model of disability, and at least three to four years experience working in the Disability Rights Movement. Qualified candidates should have demonstrated competency in the areas of advocacy, supervision, program development, grant writing/reporting, budgeting and evaluation. A commitment to disability rights and equal opportunity within a rights-based/social justice framework is preferred, as well as fluency in minority community language(s) and/or American Sign Language. Candidates should also have a working knowledge of disability rights laws, excellent communication and writing skills, and the ability to work both autonomously and collaboratively as a team player.

Systems Change Advocate
The Silicon Valley Independent Living Center (SVILC), a not-for-profit center for advocacy, service and social change for people with disabilities, is searching for an experienced advocate and community organizer to lead SVILC’s individual and systems change efforts addressing barriers to equality and independence for people with disabilities. This is an excellent opportunity to become a part of one of the first Independent Living Centers (ILCs) and disability civil rights organizations in the United States. The full time position reports to the Program Director and is responsible for building the advocacy skills of SVILC’s consumers with disabilities, and those of the larger disability community in Santa Clara county, so that they are able to engage in grassroots, sustained, effective, self- and systems-change advocacy. The Systems Change Advocate is also responsible for development and implementation of SVILC’s organizational advocacy plan, providing timely analysis of technical and policy issues to support the advocacy efforts, coordinating and cooperating with allied organizations in these efforts, and representing SVILC within the Systems Change Network of the California Foundation for Independent Living Centers and at public hearings, community events, and high-level policy arenas at the local, state, and national levels.
Qualifications: This position is designed for a person who is skilled in community organizing, dealing with conflict, and teaching others to speak truth to power. Candidates should have a strong understanding of public policy at multiple levels of government, and be equally comfortable in a legislator’s office or on a picket line. At least two years experience with a nonprofit organization working for social change or on disability issues, familiarity with disability civil rights laws, and experience with the media is required. A commitment to disability rights, independent living philosophy, and equal opportunity within a rights-based/social justice framework is preferred, as well as fluency in minority community language(s) and/or American Sign Language.
