Achieving a truly inclusive Center for Independent Living can be complicated and time-consuming. To be effective in attracting people with disabilities from diverse backgrounds, CILs must have a clear understanding of the needs, language and culture of the communities they serve and a commitment to reach people with disabilities within those communities. Successful Centers reach out to and involve people with disabilities at all levels of the organization: as consumers, staff, volunteers and donors.
Please join us this summer in Boston to learn how your Center can become more truly inclusive by achieving cultural competence effectively and efficiently. Our presenter, a nationally recognized leader in cultural and linguistic competence, will provide you with the best tools, resources, and in-depth information to assess your organization as it stands now and to develop an action plan to achieve and sustain cultural and linguistic competence.
Target Audience
Executive directors, program managers, and other staff concerned with inclusion and diversity; and board members of Centers for Independent Living; it may also be of benefit to staff and members of Statewide Independent Living Councils.
Learn:
- The benefits and rewards that linguistic competence brings to your CIL
- Five key challenges to achieving cultural and linguistic competence and effective leadership strategies to address them
- Components of diversity and culture which include data, theory, definitions and frameworks
- A four-step process to develop and conduct a systematic organizational self-assessment that addresses attitudes, behaviors, policies, structures and practices of an organization
- The framework for a successful cultural competence model
