CIL NET Presents…  A National Onsite Training

Perfect Nonprofit Boards: Myths, Paradoxes and Paradigms

February 10-12, 2010

** We are very sorry to report that this training has been cancelled. **

Contact Tim Fuchs for details.

Deadline: The deadline to register for this training and receive the discounted hotel rate is January 10, 2010.

Target Audience: Executive directors and board members of Centers for Independent Living; it may also be of benefit to staff and members of Statewide Independent Living Councils.

Is your Center in need of a fresh perspective on how to recruit, engage, and motivate board members? Join us in Phoenix to learn alternative ways of thinking about boards, so that you can ensure participation, effectiveness, and sustainability. We will explore ways to establish more meaningful governance, leadership opportunities, and better outcomes. Dr. Stephen Block will clarify areas of confusion and misunderstanding that lead to and perpetuate ineffective boards and will describe a solid philosophical foundation for building effective and successful nonprofit boards that are based on guiding principles and shared vision.

This training will take place at Arizona’s newly completed Disability Empowerment Center, the home of ABIL. The DEC serves as a national model for accessible design and ABIL is one of the largest and most successful CILs in the nation.

Lodging: Tempe Mission Palms Hotel. Nightly rate is $140.00 for single or double occupancy (plus 12.07% tax). A hospitality fee of $10.95 per night (mandatory) includes airport shuttle, guestroom internet access, parking and other amenities.

Your Presenter: Dr. Stephen Block is the director of the Nonprofit Management Program at the University of Colorado, Denver. He earned his MSW from Indiana University and Ph.D. from the University of Colorado Denver's School of Public Affairs (SPA). As a Fulbright Scholar, he taught at Moscow State University of Management and is currently involved in activities to advance nongovernmental organization (NGO) management education in Russia. His teaching and research interests include nonprofit boards of directors, executive leadership, and nonprofit organizational behavior and development. Dr. Block has authored numerous journal articles and books including Why Nonprofits Fail: Overcoming Founder's Syndrome, Fundphobia, and Other Obstacles to Success (Jossey-Bass, 2004), and Perfect Nonprofit Boards: Myths, Paradoxes & Paradigms (Simon & Schuster 1998). His latest nonprofit management textbook is in the Russian language for use in universities and NGOs throughout Russia.
